Rice University Class of 2023 Admissions Statistics

Rice Admission, Admission to Rice, Rice 2023
Rice saw a major increase in applications this year.

The admissions statistics are in the books for the Rice University Class of 2023. In all, 27,084 students applied to be members of Rice’s Class of 2023, a figure that includes both Early Decision and Regular Decision applicants. Of these students, 2,364 earned admission. This marks an overall acceptance rate of 8.7%, a figure which happens to be the lowest in the school’s history that comes on the heels of the announcement of the Rice Investment. The Rice Investment will allow students from here in the United States coming from families with combined incomes below $130,000 to attend the school on full tuition scholarships.

Rice Sets New Benchmarks for Class of 2023

As reports Amy Qin for “The Rice Thresher” in a piece entitled “Acceptance rate hits record low 8.7 percent,” “In January, the university announced that applications to the matriculating Class of 2019 increased roughly 30 percent over last year. According to [Vice President of Enrollment] Romero da Silva, Rice experienced a greater increase in applications than other peer universities this application cycle. ’So far, I have not heard that other of our peer institutions are up as much as Rice is in applications,’ Romero da Silva said. ’Some are down slightly or on par and a few are up in applications but none, to my knowledge, are up overall as much as Rice.’ Romero da Silva said that although the demographics of acceptance students are similar to that of last year’s, the incoming class may have a different demographic breakdown depending on who accepts Rice’s offer of admission. One notable exception was the amount of domestic students who applied, according to Romero da Silva.”

As our readers may remember, Rice set a new benchmark in the Early Decision round for the Class of 2023 as well — with applications up by a margin of 39%. That’s right: 39%. It was a fairly astounding jump even in a world in which application figures at our nation’s most elite universities rise just about every year. The admit rate for Rice’s ED pool stood at 15.5%, so significantly higher than the school’s overall admit rate (it pays to apply Early!). It turned out to be more than just a fast start to the admissions cycle for Rice since the increased interest in the university impacted the Regular Decision round, too.
