Cornell University has released its Early Decision notifications. A total of 6,159 students applied under Cornell’s binding Early Decision program. Of these 6,159 applicants, 1,395 were offered admission. This marks an admission rate of 22.6% for Cornell’s Early Decision applicants. 24.3% of applicants received notices of deferral. By our math, that means 53.1% of applicants were denied admission this Early cycle. To put these figures in historical perspective, Cornell received 6,319 applications for Early Decision admission to its Class of 2022 and 5,384 applications for Early Decision admission to Cornell’s Class of 2021. Cornell’s ED admit rate for the Class of 2021 stood at 24.3%, while the same figure stood at 25.6% for the ED applicants to the Class of 2021. So while ED application numbers to the Class of 2023 didn’t mark an all-time record, Cornell’s Class of 2023 ED admit rate set a new benchmark for the Ithaca, New York-based school.

Breakdown of Cornell’s Class of 2023 Early Decision Admits

Of the students admitted Early Decision to Cornell this year, 55.6% are female, while 44.4% are male. How ’bout them math skills? 39.8% of admits are students of color — including African American, Asian American, Latinx, and bi-multicultural students. 22.1% of admits are legacies, a figure that is too high in our book. International students comprise 12.3% of admitted students (international applications were up 1.5% from this time last year for the Cornell Class of 2022 ED pool). As reports Meredith Liu for “The Cornell Daily Sun” in a piece about Cornell’s Class of 2023 ED admits, “The University said in a statement to The Sun that the decrease in the number of early decision admits is ’planned in conjunction with’ a decrease in Cornell’s target number of Fall freshman enrollment from 3,278 for the Class of 2022 to 3,175 for the Class of 2023, even though Jason C. Locke, interim vice provost for enrollment, said in an earlier interview that Cornell has been working to expand its class size.” An interesting change of course!
