Admission Requirements for Johns Hopkins

Admission to Johns Hopkins University was never easy, but recent admissions cycles have thrust this prestigious research university into the ranks of the most highly selective schools in the nation. While there are technically no minimum academic requirements to be eligible for admission, students with a top academic record in the most challenging coursework available to them (and then some!) and who distinguish themselves with a singular admissions hook stand the best chance of earning admission.
JHU Class Year | Overall Acceptance Rate | Early Decision Acceptance Rate | Regular Decision Acceptance Rate |
Class of 2028 | 7.52% | 13.61% | 6.07% |
Class of 2027 | 7.25% | 14.75% | 5.94% |
Class of 2026 | 7.50% | 15.30% | 6.23% |
The data from Johns Hopkins’ last three admissions cycles is available through The Common Data Set initiative. The overall JHU acceptance rate has hovered around 7.5% over the previous three years, and the Regular Decision acceptance rate has hovered around 6% during that same interval. However, the Early Decision acceptance rate has dropped by nearly 2 points, from 15.3% to 13.6%, underscoring the trend towards increasing competition, which puts JHU on trend with most other elite schools.
Johns Hopkins Application Requirements
Johns Hopkins applicants must complete The Common Application or The Coalition Application, the Hopkins Supplement, a counselor recommendation, and two teacher recommendations. JHU notes that students applying to the Biomedical Engineering major (BME) must indicate the major as their first choice on the application, as the department caps the number of undergraduates. The application is still the same across all prospective majors, but it’s even more competitive for BME applicants.
What are Johns Hopkins’ Supplemental Essay Topics?
The Hopkins Supplement is a crucial part of your application, as it’s your opportunity to showcase your specific knowledge of JHU’s culture, history, traditions, and activities. Let’s take a look at the Hopkins supplement for the 2024-25 admissions cycle:
“How has your life experience contributed to your personal story — your character, values, perspectives, or skills — and what you want to pursue at Hopkins? (350-word limit)
The supplemental essay helps the admissions committee get a sense of how your interests and values align with the opportunities available at Hopkins.
In this essay question, we’re looking for how your background, life experiences, or interests have shaped who you are and what you want to get out of college. This can be a future goal or experience you hope to pursue at Hopkins that is academic, extracurricular, or social, or how you hope to approach your college experience as a scholar, leader, or community member.”
When are Johns Hopkins’ Application Deadlines?
Johns Hopkins’ three admissions rounds are Early Decision I, Early Decision II, and Regular Decision.
Early Decision I and II are binding processes for those 100% sure they will commit to Johns Hopkins if admitted. One of the key differences between these two rounds is the deadline (it’s also easier to get in during Early Decision I than Early Decision II). Early Decision I applications are due on November 1st, while Early Decision II applications are due on January 2nd, the same day as the non-binding Regular Decision deadline.
