Is Attending an Ivy League School Worth It?

Is attending an Ivy League school worth it? The short answer is an unequivocal yes! An Ivy League degree remains the gold standard of American higher education. But to argue that schools like Harvard and Yale distinguish themselves from other selective schools on the basis of teaching alone would be shortsighted. After all, a Psych 101 class teaches the basics of the discipline whether one is taking it at Michigan or Columbia. Ivy League schools provide students with access to some of the most influential and revolutionary minds in academia alongside a robust array of educational support resources, but these factors serve as just one of many criteria that set these eight legendary schools apart from the rest.

Ivy League Grad Donations: Top Donors

Ivy League schools don't release lists of the precise size of their individual alum donations. After all, that would be gauche. But the Ivy League schools do release their annual reports on giving in which some list the names of certain alumni in various brackets or, in some cases, certain societies. After all, donating a certain amount or giving every year since graduation at certain Ivies could lead to membership in various societies. It's not like these societies meet regularly or, in some cases, at all, but there's a certain prestige to being listed as a member. And, hey, since these big-ticket donors receive preferential treatment for their children in the admissions process, what other perks could they need?

Ivy League Class of 2028 Early Admission Statistics

It was a mixed bag for the Class of 2028 Early Action/Decision round. Of the six schools that have thus far released ample admissions figures to have an understanding of their 2023-2024 Early cycles, two -- Dartmouth College and the University of Pennsylvania -- set all-time records, while four -- Brown University, Columbia University, Harvard University, and Yale University -- did not set new benchmarks. Cornell University and Princeton University have yet to release their numbers.

2023 Ivy League Endowment Returns

While Harvard's $1.3 billion return outpaced its Ivy League peers, it's only because the school has the largest endowment -- by a sizable margin -- of the Ivies. When considering only the return for FY 2023, Brown outpaced its Ivy League peers by a wide margin. Its 12.7% return in a not-so-hot fiscal year far outpaced its closest rival, Columbia's, return of 4.7%.

How Dartmouth Schooled the Ivy League in Its Response to Antisemitism: A Statement

Over the years, the centuries-old eight Ivy League institutions have borne witness to and, in some cases, participated in some of our nation's darkest sins -- beginning with America's original sin. Today, the fifth day of December 2023, marked a day that will live in the annals of infamy as the day two Ivy League schools told Jewish students that they were not equal to their peers, that they were less than, that their safety -- and indeed their lives -- were not as valuable as the right to speak hate.

In all of our years helping students earn admission to Ivy League and other highly selective schools in America, it's a question we've never been asked more frequently than in our current moment as Israel seeks to defeat the Hamas terrorist group and Jews worldwide face daily instances of anti-Semitism, including here at home in America.
