Transferring to Duke University: Admissions Guide

Getting into Duke University is no small feat, and transferring is no different. According to Duke Undergraduate Admissions, “transfer admission to Duke is highly selective, with the admission rate ranging from 3% to 7% over the past five years. Transfer applicants are expected to have demonstrated a high level of academic talent, both at their current higher education institution and in high school.” Every year, many college students try and fail to transfer to Duke, so what sets apart those who get in?
Duke Transfer Admission Requirements and Process
Transfers to Duke must be currently enrolled in a degree-granting institution in their first or second year (in other words, no senior year transfers are allowed!). The vast majority of the cohort of roughly 50 students who transfer into Duke each year are sophomores, but a small number are juniors. Duke writes that “the most successful applicants will have a minimum college GPA of 3.7 in a challenging academic program,” and very helpfully provides the following academic profile of admitted transfers:
- GPA average = 3.90
- Mid-50% range = 3.85 – 4.0
The criteria for transfer admission to Duke are exactly the same as the criteria for first-year admission. However, since the transfer applicant has already completed at least some college-level coursework, Duke admissions officers bring an extra level of scrutiny to each applicant’s academic performance. Duke writes:
“Required materials for transfer admission include an application for transfer admission, College Report, college transcript, final high school transcript, two instructor evaluations (at least one evaluation must be from a college instructor), and required financial aid forms.”
A limited number of alumni interviews are conducted for transfer applicants on the basis of alumni availability. Those who are not requested to interview with an alum need not panic, as this has no bearing on the success of the application. In fact, the alumni interview is not an important aspect of any highly selective college application. Additionally, Duke writes: “transfer applicants are welcome to record a GLIMPSE video. Glimpse is an opportunity to share a 60-90 second video helping us to get to know you better.”
Transfers must demonstrate that they understand the unique traditions, programs, and culture that makes Duke Duke. This knowledge should be conveyed in any and all interviews, videos, and essays submitted in the application. You have to convince Duke admissions officers that you’re already a part of the community, you just simply need to transfer in. Wondering how to convey an intimate understanding of the sort of insider insights that only a current student would know about Duke? We’ve got you covered!
