What Happens if The College Board Loses AP Tests?
Just where is that box full of AP exams? If you’re one of the over 100 students who took an AP exam this past spring that was lost in transit to the headquarters of The College Board, aim your arrows at the United Parcel Service. Rest assured that the affected students, those unfortunate test-takers at the Western School of Technology in Catonsville, Maryland, were given the option to receive a projected score calculated by The College Board, retake the test the following July, or receive a full refund for the exam. Talk about being wedged between a rock and a hard place! A Lose-Lose Situation: Retake Your Lost Test or Accept a Projected Score As Elizabeth Worthington reports for ABC’s WMAR 2…
Ivy League Graduation Rates
Ivy League schools pride themselves on their many markers of institutional success, and a high graduation rate is one of the most important of these markers. But just how successful are these schools at getting their students in and out in a timely fashion? According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the six-year graduation rate for first-time, full-time undergraduates at four-year private non-profit institutions was 68% in 2020. The data presented below indicates that every Ivy League school exceeded that metric by a landslide, with the Ivy League-wide average six-year graduation rate sitting at 96.2% for the Class of 2020. But the data still shows some interesting variation between the schools, providing a look at how the Covid-19 pandemic affected…
Do Ivy Leagues Offer Financial Aid?
Colloquial knowledge would have one believe that Ivy League schools are the stomping grounds of the 1%, only affordable to the wealthiest among us. And this PR issue on the part of these elite institutions is somewhat understandable. After all, the richest students in the world are vastly overrepresented on Ivy League campuses, and an Ivy League-wide policy infamously prohibits these schools from offering merit and athletics-based scholarships. This norm is the result of a shared culture of excellence stemming from the idea that every student admitted to an Ivy League school has incredible merit, which defeats the purpose of merit-based aid. Given this context, many are surprised to learn that Ivy League schools are actually among the most affordable schools out there. How is this possible? Liberated…

Harvard’s Yield Rate
Most highly selective schools -- even the likes of Yale University and Princeton University -- carefully manage their yield rates. For those unfamiliar with the term yield rates, it’s the percentage of admitted students in a given year who choose to enroll at the university. Many of our nation’s most selective universities aim to enroll around 50% of the students they accept. Still, other highly selective universities, including Yale and Princeton, aim to enroll an even higher percentage of admitted students. But in the case of Harvard University, well, let’s just say they don’t spend too much time managing their yield. Why not? Because Harvard knows that most admitted students will choose to matriculate. Harvard is Harvard. What Is Harvard’s…
