Georgia Tech’s Class of 2029 in Historical Perspective
Take a second to look at the above chart. Notice a trend line? We sure hope you do — very few colleges have taken such a steep climb into selectivity over the last five years than this STEM-specialized private research university in Atlanta. If you were to isolate the data for the admission of the Class of 2019, you wouldn’t be remiss in characterizing Georgia Tech as a moderately selective school far from the likes of the nation’s top elite colleges.
However, the following few years proved incredibly successful for Georgia Tech’s admissions office. The Class of 2019’s then-record applicant pool of 27,277 would go on to be eclipsed each and every year, up to the present moment when an astounding 66,895 students applied for admission to the Georgia Tech Class of 2029. Paralleling this meteoric rise in application numbers has been a decrease in acceptance that most recently clocked in at 12.74%, another new record for Georgia Tech.
While no one can say for sure why Georgia Tech has managed to attract so many students these last few years, it could be that with the rising value of a degree in the STEM fields, more and more students have opted to attend an “Institute of Technology” that they perceive is easier to get into than the likes of MIT or Caltech, especially one in the bustling urban hub that is Atlanta. One thing is for sure: GT admissions officers are admitting roughly the same size class now that they did ten years ago (compare 8,520 to 8,775), and GT is thus joining the ranks of the most selective schools in the country.
Demographics of Georgia Tech’s Class of 2029
According to an article in Technique, “the 2025 cohort is made up of all 50 states — including the District of Columbia (DC), Guam and Puerto Rico, 105 nations, and 128 Georgia counties. In total, over 3,100 high schools were represented within this year’s admitted cohort, and a predicted 4,000 students are expected to enroll, a noted 3% increase from last year.” Moreover, the domestic Georgia and non-Georgia applicant acceptance rates sat at 30% and 9%, respectively, while this year’s class comprises 12% first-generation students and 45% female students.

Do these numbers daunt you? We don’t blame you. It’s harder than ever to get into Georgia Tech (especially if you’re an out-of-state applicant), and by the looks of it, next year could likely set a new record for most applicants and lowest acceptance rates in the school’s 139-year history.
