Did you apply Early Decision to Cornell University’s Class of 2029? If so, you might be looking for this year’s Early Decision admissions statistics. But we regret to inform you that while Cornell ED decisions are indeed out for the Class of 2029, the Big Red has not yet released its figures and won’t release them for several more months. Once it does, you better believe we at Ivy Coach will be the first to share them!

Cornell Delays Reporting Its Admissions Statistics

When did this Ivy League school turn its back on public admissions statistics? In March 2020, Cornell announced that it would no longer release its Early Decision or Regular Decision admissions statistics after each cycle. The school, following in the footsteps of Stanford University, last released its Early Decision admissions statistics at the end of the Early round for the Class of 2024.

At the time, as Madeline Rosenberg reported for The Cornell Daily Sun in a piece on Cornell withholding admissions figures, “Jonathan Burdick, vice provost for enrollment, told The Sun in a statement that the University will instead release application numbers after the admissions year has ended — a move that arrives because the University does not want to discourage qualified applicants.”

Burdick said then, “While metrics such as application numbers and admissions rates are an area of focus for many as they review annual activity in higher education, Cornell’s thorough and holistic review processes mean that no one applicant’s chances can be guided by’ averages.”

Cornell’s Withholding of Admissions Statistics is Nothing But Smoke and Mirrors

We at Ivy Coach would like to call Cornell on its bluff! Cornell doesn’t withhold its Early Decision and Regular Decision admissions statistics because they’re worried about the supposed mental well-being of their applicants.

No, Cornell withholds its admissions statistics because they don’t want to discourage applicants from applying. After all, the more students who apply to Cornell, the higher the institution will be ranked in the all-important US News & World Report annual list — which Cornell does care about, no matter what they’d have you believe to the contrary. Diminishing admission rates don’t exactly scream “Apply and you’ll get in!” to high school seniors, so they decided to buck the trend and keep the figures close to the vest.

However, after a year of terrible PR at Cornell due to widespread unrest and campus antisemitism, our Ivy Coach crystal ball predicts a slight dip in ED applicants. Cornell can’t keep these admissions statistics a secret for long since schools must eventually release their figures to the federally mandated Common Data Set.
