The University of Texas at Austin is the rising star of the Lone Star state. This prestigious public research university has been a popular destination for Texas’ top high school academic talent who choose to take advantage of the University of Texas at Austin’s admissions guarantee, which states that those Texas students who graduated in the top 6% of their high school’s graduating class are automatically admitted if they choose to apply. However, prospective Longhorns in the Texas area should note that starting in the 2025-2026 admissions cycle, this automatic admissions threshold will be raised to those graduating in the top 5% of their classes.

In the meantime, you’re probably reading this because you’d like to learn more about the UT Austin Class of 2029. Unfortunately, the school has yet to release admissions statistics on this new crop of incoming students, leaving us to speculate and imagine until such data is released with the next iteration of UT Austin’s federally mandated Common Data Set.

UT Austin’s Class of 2029 in Historical Perspective

UT Austin’s Class of 2028 was truly a record-breaking year. The flagship university in the University of Texas system received a staggering 72,885 applications for a mere 19,417 slots, a number larger than the population of the capital city of Wyoming: Cheyenne! This huge influx of students produced a record-breaking acceptance rate of 26.64%, placing UT Austin among the more (but not most!) selective schools in the country. While UT Austin’s not yet on the level of the most selective schools in the nation, these achievements are certainly something to be proud of.

The Class of 2028 beat out the previous record holders, the Class of 2027, for these titles, something admissions officers at UT Austin should love to see. It’s a sign of institutional strength to experience increasing interest and selectivity with each admissions cycle, and these statistics bode well for the data that is soon to be released for the Class of 2029.

The Demographics of the University of Texas, Austin Class of 2029

The racial makeup of this year’s Longhorns, as well as the geographic origins, socioeconomic breakdown, standardized test scores, and financial aid eligibility all remain a mystery. It would appear UT Austin is following the cues of many other elite schools, such as the Ivy League institutions, in keeping these details close to the vest so as not to draw any undue media scrutiny.

One thing we can say for sure, however, is that all of the UT Austin applicants submitted standardized test scores, as the school’s previous test-optional policy was phased out last year, a move that we at Ivy Coach applaud. The fact of the matter is that students who submit test scores are far better prepared for college than those who don’t, and colleges are well within their right to prefer one group over the other.
