There’s a new crop of Wolverines soon to join the green plains of the University of Michigan, and we’re not talking about the latest young adult TV craze. The University of Michigan has recently admitted its Class of 2029, and Ivy Coach is ready to unpack the admissions statistics. The only problem? Michigan leadership has opted to withhold the data! Not that this move is shocking — many schools have turned away from admissions transparency in recent years as the media has begun to scrutinize elite schools more and more. But there’s still plenty to unpack:

Michigan Class of 2029 in Historical Perspective

The data for the Class of 2029 is still forthcoming, but the acceptance rate will almost certainly be revealed in the school’s next Common Data Set. Until then, all we know is that a report by The University Record published in February 2025 states that “there were nearly 109,000 [first-year] applications, an almost 11% increase over 2024.” This is indeed a dramatic increase from previous years, which have uniformly shown increases in the total volume of the applicant pool year-by-year but never to the extent of breaking 100,000 applications.

In the last five years, the acceptance rate at Michigan has dropped from a high point of 26.11% for the Class of 2024 to a record-low 15.64% for the Class of 2028. Whether this trend of diminishing acceptance rates will hold for the Class of 2029 remains to be seen, but considering the increase of 11% and the overall trajectory of elite colleges towards dramatically decreasing acceptance rates, it’s looking like Michigan could be positioned to break yet another admissions record.

What We Do Know About the UMichigan Class of 2029

We have some insight into the demographics of those applying to the UMichigan Class of 2029. According to The University Record, the following demographic categories saw increases in the 2029 applicant pool:

First-generation students (24.5%)

In-state (0.5%)

Out-of-state domestic (11%)

International students (18%)

Students from self-reported low-income backgrounds (12%)

Students of color increased by 14%. The largest year-to-year increase within an identity group occurred in students identifying as Black or African American (17%), followed by Hispanic or Latine (15%), Native American (13%), and Asian (13%).

Does an increase in first-generation applicants necessarily mean that the incoming class will also see an increased representation of first-generation college students? Not necessarily, as there is no telling how admissions officers at UMichigan will go about curating the class from this pool.

In any event, underrepresented groups have not shied away from this esteemed public research university despite the fallout of the 2023 SCOTUS case overturning Affirmative Action. These groups of students, including Black and Latino college applicants, belong on college campuses. That’s why we at Ivy Coach encourage our students who fall into these categories to always take advantage of the Roberts Loophole to describe experiences of race-based adversity in the essay portion of their applications.
